U3A membership is not related to a specific age but to a period in one’s life (the third age) after
the first age “schooling and training” and the second age “employment and parenthood”
Anybody in their third age can join U3A and this includes people who are working part time.
There is no lower age for membership.
The seeds for “Lifelong Learning for Older People” were sown at the Summer School of the
Université du Troisième Age held in Toulouse in 1972. Within a year the International Association
of U3As was formed and in 1982 U3A was started in the UK
There are now in this country more than 990 local groups with over 365,000 members between
them. The Scarborough U3A group was founded in 1984 and now has over 500 members.
Run in two terms (running from September to December and from January to March each year) it
provides a speaker each Monday morning and over 70 courses. In Scarborough the annual fee is
£33, £20 for those joining after Christmas and £7 for those joining for just the Summer months
